No Solution Yet To Tunnel Problems
(New Zealand Press Association) TURANGI, July 19. Contractors would continue the removal of debris from a completed section of the No. 1 tunnel of the Tongariro power development scheme, and would recover steel formwork, the project engineer (Mr A. W. Gibson) said today.
In a statement released I after a meeting of Ministry of Works and CodelfaCogefar engineers, Mr Gibson said a flow of debris entered the tunnel on Tuesday from a 10ft section at the excavation face. This material spread
through 700 ft of the completed section of the tunnel, which had been lined with concrete.
A previous fall in the section occurred in May and Italian tunnellers had almost completed the job of removing the debris when Tuesday’s fall occurred. Mr Gibson said that during the recovery of the steel formwork information would be gained to find the best means of overcoming the problems of that section of the tunnel. Alternatives considered at today’s meeting included a deviation in the tunnel line. The Minister of Works (Mr Allen) said earlier today that there had been no suggestion that the tunnel should be abandoned because of the cave-in.
He said he had called for a report on the cave-in from the project engineer and he expected to be able to release a statement on it early next week.
