Plane Hits Power Lines And Car
(From Our Own Reporter)
TIMARU, July 14.
A two-seater Vieta 100 monoplane piloted by Mr J. Spicer, a member of the South Canterbury Aero Club, sliced power lines while making its approach to the Timaru airport at Levels about 3 p.m. today.
The pilot and his passenger, Mr W. Hamilton, a fellow club pilot, escaped injury, as did a man in a car which the aircraft hit when it crashed. A woman in the car suffered a bruised foot.
The club’s chief instructor, Mr A. D. Melhopt, said the club’s aircraft, which was moderately damaged, was engaged in competition flying.
“The pilot lost power and put the machine into the car parking area. The aircraft hit power lines suspended 50ft above the airfield and nosed into the back of a car,” said Mr Melhopt.
The machine came to rest near a fence. Damage was confined mainly to the wing. The car was badly damaged.
