WET FERTILISER RECEIVED BY RAIL: Although all care is taken at Hornby in covering fertiliser for rail transport, sometimes fertiliser becomes wet in transit. If fertiliser arrives at destination in a wet condition, this will be replaced free of charge provided the following is observed. (1 1 Return ONLY THAT FERTILISER WHICH IS WET by arrangement with the nearest Stationmaster. (2) Advise your merchant or write direct to P.O. Box 1244, Christchurch, without delay, giving the information below: ADVISE (a) Quantity returned wet. (b) Type of fertiliser. (c) Truck No. (d) Date of consignment shown on your advice note. (e) MERCHANT THROUGH WHICH ORDERED. Function of Major Plant Foods and pH: WHAT IS pH? A pH test is a measurement of the acidity or alkalinity of soil, i.e. soil reaction. It is essential for determining the lime requirement of the soil. Because plants vary in their preference for soils of differing acidities and alkalinities, a pH test enables planting in soil of the proper reaction for fullest growth. The measurement is based on the pH scale where 7.0 is neutral values from 0.0 to 7.0 are acid and values from 7.0 to 14.0 are alkaline. NITROGEN Stimulates growth above ground. Aids in the utilisation of Phosphorus, Potash and other nutrient elements in the soil. Excess of Nitrogen is harmful and must be used in balanced ratio with other plant foods. Nitrogen is one of the key elements essential to plant life and produces the rich green colour characteristic of a healthy plant. Soils are usually low in nitrates due to the ease with which it is leached out of the soil and because it is consumed in volume by living plants. PHOSPHORUS Stimulates early root formation and growth. Hastens maturity of crops. Increases ratio of grain and fruit to stalk. Usually present only in small amounts, is quickly exhausted and must be replenished. Of utmost importance in plant life, Phosphorus gives a rapid and vigorous start to plants, stimulates flowering and aids in seed formation. POTASSIUM A general tonic for all types of plants. Improves quality of the yield. Promotes stamina and sturdy growth. Availability of Potassium for plant consumption is influenched by the presence of other elements in the soil, such as Calcium, Nitrogen and Phosphorus. A primary food of great importance, imparting increased vigour and disease resistance to plants. It is responsible for producing strong stiff stalks and increased plumpness in grain and seeds and is essential in the development of chlorophyll (the basic green pigment in plants). CALCIUM Inexpensive but important. Forms a structural part of the wall of plant cells. Reduces toxic acidity. Increases availability of nitrogen and other elements. It is generally applied to soils in the form of calcium carbonate (limestone) or as an ingredient in commercial fertilisers. Overliming of soils can render important trace elements, such as Iron, unavailable to the plant.
