Shoe Design Winner
A young Christchurch shoe designer, one of the first women designers to be employed by a New Zealand footwear manufacturer, was awarded a first prize in this year’s national footwear design competition. Miss Sharon Alston received her award for her entry in the children's section. She designed a squaretoed, block-heel style with a high tongue rising up the vamp, and punching a design
on the brown, antiqued leaher. Children's shoes have been part of Miss Alston's work during her training at Regent Footwear, Ltd, in the last 10 months. The only other woman contestant also came from Christchurch. There were about 100 entries. Mr J. Hockley, also of Regent Footwear, won the men's casual section for his low-cut boot which featured heavysaddle stitching and bronze studs ranged across the vamp and at the back. He was highly commended for his entry in the children’s section. This was a party shoe in orange with an off-white sprayed check pattern on the front and back.
