CARPET WOOLS

Gains In America (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 12. The continuing demand for New Zealand crossbred wool by the United States is reflected in the April consumption figures released today by the International Wool Secretariat, says the Wool Board. The latest gains more than made up for last year’s reduced demand, it said. The figures show carpet wool imports of 10m lb were 5 per cent greater than in April, 1966, and 209 per cent higher than April, 1967. For the four months January to April, imports were 39.1 m lb—a 7 per cent gain over the corresponding period in 1966, and a 93 per cent gain over the same period in 1967.

Carpet wool imports from New Zealand at 16.9 m lb for January-April now account for 43 per cent of the total—an increase of more than 17 per cent over 1966, and 127 per cent over the same period last year.

Report Rejected.—New Zealand yesterday rejected as unacceptable the report of a United Nations sub-committee which criticised the New Zealand Government for doing insufficient to bring the Pacific Islands of Niue and Tokelau to independence.—New York, July 12.
