A Shirley Corner

Sir,—l wonder if the dangers of the intersection where Shirley Road, Hills Road, and Aylesford Street meet have been considered. Vision up Hills Road when approaching from Shirley Road is sometimes nil, almost nil the rest of the time owing to the petrol pumps on the road edge and the cars which naturally enough are beside them. It is difficult enough to watch Hills Road to the left where the through traffic is wasting no time and Aylesford Street in front, at a blind angle, without having to guess what might be bearing down on the right.—Yours, etc, FREQUENT USER. July 8, 1968. (The traffic superintendent of thb Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) replies: "As Aylesford Street is a separate intersection to that of Shirley Road-Hills Road-Warrington Street, it is assumed that the correspondent refers to the by-pass from Shirley Road on to Hills Road. It cannot be conceded that visibility is poor, as a clear view is obtained of Aylesford Street, and the petrol pumps situated in Hills Road, in themselves, do not constitute an obstruction. The matter of vehicles being serviced at the petrol pumps is under review at the present time.”]
