St Andrew’s More Enterprising

An icy wind and unstable footing did not deter St Andrew’s College backs from running and passing the ball in their match against St. Bede’s College yesterday.

Their efforts were rewarded with two fine tries from back movements, and St Andrew’s won, 11-5. For St Andrew’s, tries were scored by G. A. Wilson, G. A. Cartwright, and W. D. Seed. S. J. Abbott kicked a conversion. S. D. Swanson scored a try for St. Bede’s, which was converted by B. C. Davidson.

St Andrew's: Abbott, Wilson. Cartwright, Seed, C. F. King. W. P. D. Whiteside, D. J. Cooney, I. J. Lockle, P. Le Gros, J. Masson, P. J. Graham, L. R. French-Wright, F. R. Twlsa. G. B. Murdoch, J. Hay.

St Bede's: M. C. Loulsson, D. P. Dlreen, J. M. Matheson. D. J. Berry. A. K. Eathorne, M. F. McKee, M. J. Keenan, J. W. Clough, A. R. Bell, Swanson, D. M. Thompson Davidson, B. T. Cunneen, J. R. Bunker, W. P. Glass.

Penalty Disallowed The scores should have been closer but a St Bede's penalty goal In the first half was disallowed when a man was in front when the ball was kicked. However, the score did not flatter St Andrew’s. It was better served by the forwards and Its backs were more enterprising. Both packs played with determination. The st Bede’s forwards hurled themselves into rucks, but disregarded the ball when they got there and the St Andrew's forwards, playing with equal fire, channelled the ball back to their half-back quickly and neatly from loose rucks.

The St Andrew's backs were not needed much in defence for only twice did the St Bede's

first five-eighths. McKee, pass the ball on, but on attack the St Andrew's centre, Cartwright, ran strongly, pushed off tackles easily and gave bis wings room to move.

He scored an excellent try himself and made a powerful break through three tackles to give Wilson outside him an easy try. Abbott, at full-back, caught the ball well but was sometimes lackadaisical about hia positional play.

Both sides had periods of control tn the line-outs, but FrenchWright, for St Andrew’s, was consistently above the others and took the ball cleanly. J. Masson was extremely fast I ; the loose for St Andrew’s and made the St Bede's five-eighths kick hastily. Of the St Bede's forwards, Swanson played an excellent game, foraging for the loose ball, and his try was a just reward for close following up. The St Bede's captain gave a fine example of intelligent football and was one of the few forwards In his team who looked for the bell In rucks He often expertly set up rucks for st Bede's after taking a tap penalty. The unfortunate tactic adopted by the St Bede's five-eighths of kicking each time the ball came out deprived the game of much enjoyment, but there was an impressive display by the nuggety full-back, Loulsson. He is built like W. F. McCormick and bls playing ability seemed to come from the same mould. His positional play was excellent, he caught the ball well and reeled off long line kicks into and against the wind.

Referee: Mr A. G. Duckmanton.
