RACING Stable Double Likely At Trentham Tomorrow

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Red Crest and Cambridge Fair are expected to bring off a notable double for J. W. Winder’s Cambridge stable on the final day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting tomorrow.

Nothing seems more certain than that these form horses will form one of the most strongly supported combinations for the T.A.B. double.

Red Crest is second topweight with 9st 21b in the first leg, the Winter Oats Handicap. He carried 31b less when he ran Midnight Kiss to a short head in the Parliamentary Handicap on Wednesday. R. W. Taylor, who will ride both Red Crest and Cambridge Fair tomorrow, feels that the result of the Parliamentary Handicap hinged on developments near the home turn. . . . t Taylor was anxious to take Red Crest wide on the track in search of the best possible footing, but to have done so he would have had to check the Gigantic gelding losing perhaps two lengths, to clear Midnight Kiss. Midnight Kiss is up 61b on his Parliamentary Handicap weight and 9st 61b is a daunting impost for one of his size. But if he lacks good size he has a generous measure of courage and stamina and no one could be surprised if he carried off the honours to give him an unbeaten record at the meeting.

Obvious Claims

Jay Ribbon, winner of the Whyte Handicap last Saturday, has obvious claims amongst those from the middle of the handicap. He showed he could manage a middle distance very competently as a hack and also when he won the Waimate Cup in May. Gus was beaten too far from home in the Parliamentary Handicap to be rated a top chance for a race he won two years ago. His run on Wednesday could not be compared with the one put up by Dark Song in coming from last for third in the Parliamentary Handicap. Dark Song is field shy, and has to be ridden carefully. This usually means he has to be kept out in the open near the tail of the field, which sets him formidable tasks in the last two furlongs in fields of average size. Kalott, the Whyte Handicap fourth and a competent mare at a middle distance, should be the best in the lower half of the handicap.

Cambridge Fair failed at seven furlongs after winning his first Stewards’ Handicap at six furlongs at Trentham last year. With another year on him—he is now four—this mudlark should take beating with Bst 101 b in the Onslow Handicap. Cambridge Fair is one pound below the Washdyketrained Glamis Lad, whose prospects look hardly less appealing. Glamis Lad is a robust horse, and his second on the second day of the meeting, reflected improvement as a result of his run in the Whyte Handicap last Saturday. Glamis Lad lost a good position early in the Members’ Handicap on Wednesday, after appearing to strike a bad patch of ground down on the inside. By the time he mounted his powerful run in the straight, Head Off had the race as good as won. Head Off is engaged again. If there is rain to loosen the ground by tomorrow, this four-year-old from Te Awamutu should again be concerned in the finish. Redaire is finding it difficult to improve on minor platings from her present place in the weights. Bijali is not built in the weight carrying mould, and Dunraven is finding the role of pacemaking difficult from his present place in the weights

Of those near or close to the minimum, the Gisbornetrained Golden Summit looks the most likely. He ran second over this distance at Hastings before coming to Trentham where he did not go at all badly for eighth in the Whyte Handicap.
