BURNSIDE PLANTING
Programme For Season An extensive planting programme is being undertaken at the Burnside High School. The headmaster (Mr C. Cross) reported last evening that the Parent-Teacher Association had given $5O toward trees and shrubs for the Memorial Avenue boundary where the Education Department would be asked for a permanent fence: shrubs and rocks had been placed round the new gymnasium entrance: pupils, through the School Council, had asked permission to plant more trees before the spring; and 40 dozen plants were being raised in the school's thermostaticallycontrolled glasshouse for flower beds. Mr Cross said access through an empty section in the north corner of the grounds would now provide a path for the many pupils who came from the Guildford Street area.
An animal house, constructed last year as a fifth form woodwork exercise, will be used for specimens studied in biology. Mr Cross also reported that pupils had raised $3OO so far this year for overseas aid projects; that a group had taken the Automobile AssociationTransport Department driving course; and that “The Mikado" would be presented from August 6 to 8 with a cast of 78 pupils and many more helping in the orchestra and staging.
