Agreement On Date For New School

Agreement that a high school at Kaiapoi should be established between 1971 and 1973 was reached yesterday at a meeting of representatives of the Kaiapoi Borough Council, the Education Department, Canterbury Educational Board, Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council, Rangiora High School board and other local interests.

The Regional Superintendent of Education (Mr S. S. P. Hamilton) said last evening that a multi-course coeducational high school, starting with third forms only, could build up to a roll of 600 without leaving the Rangiora roll much short of 1000. This had been shown from population figures studied at previous meetings of interested parties. Yesterday’s meeting had to determine a time for the establishment of the Kaiapoi high school for recommendation to the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella), who had initiated these talks. Kaiapoi was naturally keen

for an early start and Rangiora was equally keen that the new school should not be established before there was' sufficient school population to support both. The period now recommended should meet the requirements of all parties, Mr Hamilton said.
