Tongue Over The Bit
The Biccarton-trained Allegretto got his tongue over the bit in the Vittoria Hurdles at Trentham on Saturday. He dropped out In the last halfmile to finish eighth. The winner, at odds of 40 to one, was Nice Peter, a seven-year-old owned by Mr H. S. Parker, of Carterton, who had some success with Toureg a few years ago. Nice Peter won by a length and a half from Town Crier, which dropped back quickly near the five furlongs, but made a late rally and caught the favourite, Kelloman, in the last few strides. Town Crier’s rider, P. R. Wilson, said he met no interference: the horse simply refused to do his best at the stage where he lost ground. Wilson, however, persisted, and Town Crier responded over the last two furlongs.
