Two Ships Shelter

(7V.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 7. Two Northern Steamship Company coasters, the Bay Fisher and the Poranui, sought shelter from heavy seas in the Bay of Plenty today. The ships in ballast on their way from Auckland to the South Island to load wheat, were pounded by seas off the Coromandel Peninsula. The master of the 1289-ton Bay Fisher (Captain B. J. Dobbs, of Mount Maunganui) said: “We couldn’t make much headway. We went to shelter off Mayor Island but it was hopeless.” The Poranui (892 tons) sister ship of the sunken Maranui, is believed to have taken shelter this evening off the Mercury Island group.
