Down 8-16, Then Lions Win 22-19
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) PRETORIA. A great second-half rally brought the British Lions a narrow victory over Northern Transvaal yesterday.
Trailing 8-16 at half-time, the Lions burst through after the interval to win, 22-19. The Irish full-back. T. J.
Kieman, in tremendous kicking form, scored 16 of the Lions’ points four penalty goals and two conversions. M. Coulman and M. Richard* scored tries. For Northern Transvaal, G. Pitzer, C. Dirksen and F. du Preez scored tries, P. Steyn dropped a goal and D. Pretorius kicked a penalty and two conversions. Northern Transvaal, with six internationals in its team, held the initiative for long spells, its heavy forwards rolling the Lions back in defence. But the tourists held off the pressure and came back with great spirit. A try by Coulman just after the interval, converted by Kierman, and three penalty goals by the Irishman — one from 50 yards—swept the Lions into a 22-16 lead. Northern Transvaal’s only score of the second half, a penalty, came only three minutes from the end, and the Lions held off desperate efforts to save the game.
