QUALITY OF TEA

Statement Retracted

A statement made last month criticising the standard of Ceylon tea sold in New Zealand has been retracted. Mr A. J. Tanbourne, a retired Ceylon tea planter now living in Christchurch, said on Wednesday evening that he had written to the chairman of the Tea Council of New Zealand (Mr D. M. Finnigan) retracting a statement in which he said that New Zealand was regarded as a dumping ground for inferior grade teas by tea-producing countries such as Ceylon. The council had asked the Ceylon Government to make a clear statement on the issue.
