Return Of Islands

The United States today hauled down the Stars and Stripes which has flown for the last 23 years over the Bonin Islands, to mark the official return of the islands to Japan.
The 30 palm-fringed islets are the second territory returned to Japan since World War 11. The United States returned the Amami Oshima Islands, located between the main southern-most Japanese Island of Kyushu and Okinawa, in 1953.
Mid-day hand-over ceremonies took place on three islands of the chain—Chichijima, the biggest and only inhabited Island, Iwo Jima, the scene of fierce fighting towards the end of the war where 6800 American and 22,000 Japanese lives were lost and Minami Torishima (Marcus) which became Japan's southern-most meteorological observation post
