TESTS ON OPOSSUMS
Opossums in bush faces between Jacksons Creek and Michael Creek and above the Kiwi hut on the Taramakau River are being subjected to a series of searching tests by the forest and range experimental station of the Forest Service. All the areas are in the Main Divide. Mr C. L. Batcheler, who is in charge of the survey, said that the tests were to determine the extent of opossum populations in the area.
Cyanide poison would be ; laid and the dead opossums examined to see their general health, the effect of control, pregnancy rates, and the type of opossums killed by the poison. Mr Batcheler said that a similar test a few years ago showed an increase in population in the areas of the present tests. This survey would show the time taken for opossum populations to recover in poisoned areas. Mr Batcheler said the test was not to determine the type of food eaten by opossums. A survey of diet and damage to foliage would be made this summer.
