Kaiapoi-bred Winner
This youngster had been registered as Garden Way before he ran promisingly in the parade for two-year-old colts and geldings at the last Grand National meeting. But Tauranga patrons saw him win under the name of Fountain Gold at the Bay of Plenty meeting last Saturday.
Fountain Gold was bred at the Morwensto Stud at Kaiapoi by Mr D. B. C. Allin, and is now raced in partnership by Messrs W. Deutsch and H. H. Brandon.
Mr Deutsch's interest in the youngster was understandable. Fountain Gold is by Fountainhead which was a brilliant winner in the Deutsch colours a few years ago. Whenever in Christchurch Mr Deutsch makes a point of travelling to the Morwenstow Stud to see Fountainhead. On one such visit last autumn he was attracted to a colt by his old champion out of Lawn, an unraced mare by Messmate from Bowling Green which
had been bought by Mr Allin at auction for 30gns.
The youngster was bought soon after to race in the partnership of Messrs Deutsch and Brandon. In G. W. B. Greene’s stable at Takanini Fountain Gold has been paid the high compliment of being given the stable name “Rusty,” as his sire had been known before him.
Mr Deutsch wrote to Mr Allin recently saying he felt confident the two-year-old would win at Tauranga, and that he had high hopes for the youngster in the early spring classics. He believes Fountain Gold could be “the old horse” all over again.
