Xavier Well Beaten
“The Press” Special Service OAMARU. June 26. Producing more determination In the forwards—and stronger running in the backs, St Kevin's College beat Xavier College, 23-11, at Rugby yesterday. Outstanding among the backs of both teams was the Xavier centre, B. Cox, who consistently evaded tackles and made good runs.
The main falling in the Xavier team was the lack of strong tackling, although this was rectified to some extent in the second half.
For St Kevin’s, the flanker, C. Cummings, lead forward attack, took a fair share of the ball in the line-outs and was very quick on to the Xavier backs when the visitors won the ball. The two outstanding St Kevin’s backs were J. Steele «nd S. Oliver, who ran hard and fast, while all the backs tackled well. For Xavier, M. Hoskin and B. Bateman put in hard work, Hosklng winning most of Xavier's ball in the line-outs.
The slightiy-bullt half-back, R. Foote, was very quick around the side of the scrum and often upset D. Langford’s passes. The first five-eighths, T. Emery kicked two good long-range penalties for Xavier and a conversion, while the wings, P- McGlinchey and P. O'Rourke, both demonstrated their speed. Scorers were: St Kevin’s, S. Oliver (2) and P. O’Connor tries; J. Hailes, four penalties, one conversion. For Xavier, J. O’Donnel a try; Emery two penalties, one conversion.
