Fire In Hold

Firemen used breathing apparatus to combat dense smoke when a cork-insulated plug hatch caught fire in the No. 1 shelter deck of the refrigerated cargo liner Romanic at Cashin Quay yesterday afternoon. An electric light bulb cluster touching the hatch caused the fire. The ship was in ballast and nothing was in the cargo hold where the fire occurred.

Firemen on four engines, two from Lyttelton and one each from Woolston and Headquarters Stations answered the alarm given at 2.25 p.m.
