Whakamoa In Favour
"The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NTH. The top ■ weight, Whakamoa, in spite of his poor showing at Waipa, looks a definite prospect for tomorrow’s Winter Handicap at Hastings. His record on the track is far too good to overlook against moderate opposition.
A decisive success at Wanganui showed that Whakamoa is still a strong force in provincial class. From a handy draw at No. 5 he should be prominent throughout. Whakamoa has the reputation of a left-hand track specialist. Because of this he could have had difficulty handling the Waipa course with its sharp turns and short straight. Back at Hastings again he drops a pound in weight and meets weaker company, so it is hardly likely that he will be allowed out at fancy odds. W. D. Skelton will be on Agricole again and this could be a good chance for the horse. On his home track and on drier ground Agricole could show rapid Improvement. Janeville Is another worth
watching this week. She has improved in recent weeks after a patch of moderate form. Of the light-weights, John Derry could give a good account of himself. He has been working attractively and with a little luck in the running he could spring a major surprise. It is Impossible to entirely overlook horses like Lucky Rebel. Dark Song, and Justify, although all would need to improve to win this. Min Flicka may be the hardest to beat in the Mahora Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double. Lately she has shown signs of improvement and. with W. D. Skelton to ride her, she will be in keen demand.
