RACING Etassem Hurdles Pick Tomorrow
The Wingatui trainer, W. J. Hewitt, will saddle form runners for both legs of the on-course double at Ashburton tomorrow.
After winning handily at Oamaru last week Etassem looks a bright prospect for the Hinds Hack Hurdles, a race he won last year.
Camaro. the stable runner In the Lyndhurst Handicap, is the only winner in the field. However he appears likely to have tougher opposition than Etassem. Some of his rival candidates are youngsters with encouraging placed form. Narcotic looked very promising in running third in his race debut at Riccarton last month.
Suppi-Yawlet was fourth, close behind Narcotic at Kfccarton, and Court Star finished sixth after being in the front line until fairly close to home.
The Dromore Steeplechase has attracted a field likely to provide one of the most interesting races of the Canterbury winter circuit The Dromore has been a race in which three recent Grand National winners, John O'Groats, KoraU and Game Call, gave early glimpses of their ability as steeplechasers. Last year’s winner, Lord Fair, could have been unlucky not to win the Grand National as well. He had some compensation with a win in the Beaufort
The Wingatui trainer, J. S. McKay, who has had marked success with his jumpers at Ashburton, and won with Lord Fair last year, has Lambano engaged this time. Near Go, second at Oamaru last week, could be another stronger contender from Wingatui, but the chances of the Canterbury trio, Silver Kingdom, Istan Light and Lovely Clover, look brighter than most Silver Kingdom could be the favourite after his decisive win over the same distance with 61b less at Riccarton last month. The TA.B. double will be on the Maronan Handicap and the Moreton Handicap. Royal Blue, Fairlane, and Jay Ribbon may be the pick of the field in the first leg. Bevlyn and Bigoted, both winners at Oamaru, are two of the strong fancies for the second leg. OM-COURSE DOUBLE 11.34 a.m.—
