Problem Of Matching Workers To Jobs
>Hew Zealand Prete Association)
HAMILTON, June 11.
A considerable body of unemployed persons were capable workers but, for one reason or another, did not match the work available, the Secretary of Labour (Mr N. S. Woods) said in Hamilton today.
Many of the unemployed were from softer jobs and were not at the pgak of physical fitness, he said. When there was a demand in some jobs for extremely fit people, those who were less fit could not be used, he said. In spite of the number of unemployed, the department had not been able to match demands for labourers at times because of this, said Mr Woods.
Mr Woods said that too many employers planned the upgrading of their machines and undertakings, without an equivalent upgrading plan for their labour.
Then they had to sack their existing workers and try to get new ones. This was good for neither the employer nor the employee, said Mr Woods. “Employers should plan labour changes with plant changes,” he said.
