Show Week Later

People’s Day at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show this year will be on the third Friday of November—not the second Friday as usual. Mr H. M. Studholme, the association’s secretary manager, said yesterday that it was widely assumed that People’s Day was always on the second Friday in November.

Many made arrangements in advance on that assumption and this year one big store had planned a special promotion for Show Week, only to find that it was a week too early.

Show dates were fixed in relation to Labour Day, which was itself fixed by statute for the fourth Monday in October. People’s Day was the third Friday after Labour Day. “It happened this year,” said Mr Studholme, “that Labour Day is on October 28, the latest day it can possibly be in October. The show, and the races and trots which also fix their dates in relation to Labour Day, will be as late this year as it is possible to be.”

Mr Studholme said a lot of confusion resulted when People’s Day fell on the third Friday in November. This had happened in 1929, 1935, 1940, 1957 and 1963.
