DISPOSABLE BOTTLES
Counties Assn Opposed
Delegates to the New Zealand Counties Association conference yesterday Spoke strongly against the introduction of non-returnable bottles, and another remit on this subject, described as a hardy annual, was adopted asking for a 5c deposit to be imposed on glass containers.
Oil Heating.—The annual licence fee of $1 charged on home oil-fired heating plants with tanks of more than 30 gallons should be removed as it was neither possible nor necessary to inspect them annually, said Mr J. Clark (Southland). Farm oil storage paid an initial licence only, and the same should apply to home plants. His remit along these lines was carried.
Chairmen.—A remit seeking to have chairmen elected by councils for their threeyear terms was defeated, the main objection being that councils hould have the right to change unsatisfactory chairmen when they wished.
Subdivisions.—More subdivision was proposed by the Crown at Lake Rotoiti, and the council wanted the Crown to provide reading of an equal standard to the council’s improved roading, said Mr J. L. Borlase (Waimea), whose remit, asking that the Crown be bound to subdivision requirements, was carried.
Litter.—A Waimairi remit adopted asked the Government to implement the Litter Bill. Mr Rich said that little had been achieved over the last 12 months for effective control of the litter problem. Gorse.—There was little support for an AkitiO remit which asked for a subsidy oi suspensory loan to enable farmers to eradicate gorse.
