Viet Cong Recruit Women
(N.X. Prist Assn.—Copyright) SAIGON, June 10. The Viet Cong have quietly stepped up their propaganda efforts to recruit young women in the last six months, with an emphasis on finding girls for combat duties, rather than for support roles as in the past, the “New York Times” News Service reported. While there are no figures on the number of women in the Viet Cong, the enemy has sought—with success in many cases—to fill small guerrilla units with women. Documents show the Viet Cong would like women to comprise from one-third to one-half of their guerrilla strength to replace losses and release men for the local and main forces, said one recent military report. American officials have begun studying the new Viet Cong drive for women, as well as examining the over-.il role of women in Vietnam.
