Amberley’s New Fire Engine
A new fire engine was handed over to the Amberley Volunteer Fire Brigade by the Ashley County Council last week.
So that the brigade could have an engine of a higher standard than that authorised by the New Zealand Fire Services Council, the County
Council agreed to buy the dearer unit and hire it to the Amberley Urban Fire Authority, which will be respohsible for all operating and maintenance expenses. The new 6B appliance cost SI 1.000 and was $2OOO to $3OOO dearer than the 11A appliance approved by the Fire Services Council.
Nothing was too good for a voluntary organisation such as the fire brigade, said the chairman of the council (Mr J. S. Bowker). Any equipment that the council could make available to the brigade to save the life and property was worth while.
The photograph shows Mr Bowker opening the door of the cab during the handingover ceremony. The others from left are Mr C. A. S. Lowe (insurance underwriters' representative on the Fire Authority), Mr G. A. Hay (secretary and county clerk), Chief Fire Officer E. A. Arthur, Deputy-Chief Fire Officer R. Fletcher, Mr W. H. Nurse (insurance underwriters’ representative), and Mr A. J. R. Blakely (a councillor and chairman of the fire authority).
