Checkers Increase Lead

Checkers consolidated Its substantial lead in the women's A grade Indoor basketball competition when it beat Rangiora, the bottomplaced team, <l-15, in Cowles Stadium last evening.

The win gave Checkers a clear lead of 10 points over Brighton, the nearest challenger, and even at this stage of the season Checkers appear certain to win the club championship for the fourth successive season.

In the other A grade game, Rex beat Rebels. 16-10. with a rather uninspiring display. Points are: Checkers 22, Brighton 12, Rebels 9, Rex 8. University 5, Rangiora 2. Easy Win CHECKERS 41: J. Partridge 14, S. Rennell 12, D. Entwistle 9, S. Sweney 8. RANGIORA 15: L. Rollinson 5, J. Quinn 4, J. Chatterton 2. At times Rangiora offered spirited resistance to Its more experienced and skilful opponents, but was mostly out played. Checkers generally penetrated the Rangiora defence with ease and made good use of fast breaks.

At half-time Checkers led 17-5. and had it not scored another point in the second half it would still have won. The country girls increased their score by 10 in the second spell. Occasionally they scored with smart passing moves, but unfortunately, these moves were too infrequent.

A Checkers forward, J. Partridge, had a goal-scoring field

day and completed her team's moves with professional efficiency. S. Sweney set up play well from mid-court. S. RennelJ and D. Entwistle were also prominent. L. Rollinson was Rangiora*s outstanding player. The team's Canterbury representative, C. Reuben, was marked closely. (crappy Game REX 16: B. Fellows 9, E Young 3, K. Thompson 2, J. Sloper 2. REBELS 10: P. HenshHwood 6, C. Cook 3, P. Ruwhin 1. Although it had its promising moments, this game was generally very scrappy and both sides showed little appreciation of finer skills. The defensive play was good, but there was little to commend the offensive patterns of either team. At half-time, Rex led, 7-1. Rebels rallied in the second spell, but did not look likely to make up the points lost earlier. H. Fellows was again the architect of Rex’s victory. Her offensive work under the basket was outstanding. E. Young also plaved well. P. Henshilwood and C. Cook were the best Rebels players. Lower Grades B Grade.—University B 28.
