Art Competition Awards Given
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 10. A Wellington artist, Roger Harrison, tonight won the major prize in the 1968 Kelliher art competition. His landscape, “Morning Light, Tauherenikau Valley,” earned him the $lOOO first prize.
The competition judge, Mr R. C. McFadyen, the Australian official war artist, said Mr Harrison showed considerable talent and skin.
The second and third prizes in the landscape section, worth $6OO and $4OO, went to Colin V. Wheeler, of Oamaru, for his “Grasmere, Canterbury,” and Alan Crombie, of Dunedin, for “West Coast Sawmill” respectively. The newly introduced portrait section, carrying a $5OO award, was won jointly by Miss Ir Carey, or Hamilton, and Gaston De Vel, of Hamilton.
Miss Carey’s portrait was of an old Maori woman, “Amohia Tuhua.” Mr De
Vel’s study of a young graduate was entitled “William Roche, 8.A.” Mr McFadyen suggested that New Zealand artists should um this talent to portray people and landscape combined, and thus capture the spirit of New Zealand. The exhibition, which will ran for the next two weeks, was opened hy the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath). Landscape merit award; ($50): D. Neilson, Masterton; R. B. Watson, Wellington; J.
