Elections In U.K.
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON, June 10. Britain’s Labour Government faces two by-elections at Brightside, Sheffield, Yorkshire, and Oldham West, Lancashire, on Thursday. If recent swings against the Government continue, it is certain to lose one and possibly both of the seats. The Labour Party, which won healthy majorities in both constituencies at the last General Election in 1966, has a dismal by-election record over the last 18 months. In the “Sunday Express” today “Crossbencher” said there was no doubt the Conservatives would do well. “The uncertain factor—just how well,” the columnist said.
If the huge swing to the Right of the last batch of byelections proved to have slackened, the Conservative leader, Mr Edward Heath, would have real reason for alarm, "Crossbencher” said.
