Ham-Clyde Roads
Sir, —A woman cyclist suffered some ihjuries in an accident the other day at the Ham-Clyde Roads intersection, which reminds me that it is just about two years since I abandoned the apparently fruitless struggle to persuade the local authority to take some steps, such as a “Give Way” sign on Ham Road at this busy cross-road and shopping centre. I have lived in this district 14 years, visiting the shopping centre at least once a day as pedestrian, bicyclist, and motorist, so have had ample opportunities to assess the dangers, about which local shopkeepers with a clear view of the cross-roads traffic have little doubt. Moreover, Clyde Road is a bus route.—Yours, etc., ILAM. May 30,1968. [The chairman of the Waimairi County Council (Cr D. B. Rich) comments: "The intersection of Clyde and Ham Roads has been discussed by council on numerous occasions, and in the light of reports presented by the chief traffic officer, the council considers that Stop or Give W«y signs are not desirable at this corner. The question of fastmoving traffic along Clyde Road relying on signs positioned on Ham Road would create a greater danger and the risk of more serious accidents than exists at present. The painting of centre lines on each corner and the word ‘Slow,’ in addition on Clyde Road, has proved of value.”]
