Biographical Notes
Sir Jack Acland has been chairman of the New Zealand Wool Board since August, 1960, and is also vice-chair-man of the board of the International Wool Secretariat His father, a prominent Christchurch surgeon, was also a knight and his brother-in-law, Sir John Ormond, is chairman of the New Zealand Meat Board. Sir Jack Acland’s home is the 18,000acre Mount Peel property in South Canterbury. From 1942 to 1946 he was member of Parliament for Temuka. He became a member of the New Zealand Wool Board in 1947 and was elected deputychairman in 1956. Since his election as chairman he has played a leading role in the reorganisation of the 1.W.5., and he has always been an outspoken supporter of expanded world promotion of wool and wool research. Mr John Reid has been managing director of Helicopters (N.Z.), Ltd, since the company was founded in Nelson in 1962. He was born in Christchurch and educated at
Christ’s College. Mr Reid served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force during the war, and later visited England to learn to fly helicopters. He has since flown helicopters on many rescues in the Southern Alps and elsewhere in the South Island, often in hazardous conditions. With two other company pilots he flew the first helicopters into Inangahua last month to help to bring out earthquake victims. Mr A. R. Guthrey accepted the nomination of the Citizens’ Association as mayoral candidate in April. He has been a councillor for 24 years, and is chairman of the Christchurch Airport Authority and of the Christchurch City Council’s city development committee. Born on the West Coast, Mr Guthrey was awarded the Military Cross during the Second World War and was severely wounded. He founded A. R. Guthrey and Company, Ltd, in 1944 and is a director of Air New Zealand and several Christchurch companies.
