Top Hair Style
Miss Susan Parker was chosen from 25 other competitors as the Canterbury winner of the “New Zealand line” hair fashion competition at the “Hair Fashion Spectacular” in the Maiestic Theatre on Wednesday evening.
She will compete with the 15 other New Zealand finalists in Wellington on August 14, in the quest to create a style that is suitable for the average New Zealand woman. Contestants, who were given 20 minutes to comb up their sets, were judged on creative ability, the suitability of the stylp to their chosen model, finish, and the imaginative use of colour.
Miss Parker, aged 21, works for Jillian Heine. She has had previous success in hairdressing competitions. She won the day style section of the Canterbury, Westland, Nelson and Marlborough association competitions, as well as gaining most points in the styling section. In the same year she won the evening style in the national competitions.
Miss Parker’s style had soft sculptured curls with emphasis on the crown. She worked with medium-length hair in a subtle shade of medium blonde. None of the contestants worked with long hair and the majority chose shades of red and blonde for colouring the hair. Second place was awarded to Miss Brenda Gay, and Mr Stuart Smith was third. The winner of the national final in the contest, sponsored by Sonata Laboratories and 8.0.A.C., will receive a round-the-world trip, visiting the world hairdressing championships in Vienna, at which he or she will demonstrate the New Zealand line. In the contest, curls made a spectacular comeback and the return of the ringlet was in evidence.
