RETIREMENT AGE

Statement By A.S.R.S.

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 16. The national council of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants said today that it had noted the reappointment of Mr I. Thomas as General Manager of Railways for a further three-year term, which would give him 43 years service. “Whilst we appreciate the Government’s confidence in Mr Thomas, we believe that the department’s policy of retirement at 40 years service or 65 years of age, whichever is the earlier, should be applicable to every railwayman without distinction, more particularly as it is now enforcing this policy on lowerpaid employees,” said the statement.
