Five Admitted To Hospital

Five persons were injured when a car struck a pole near the Sumner end of the McCormack’s Bay causeway about 9.26 p.m. yesterday. Miss Joy Gilbert, aged 15, of 332 Stanmore Road, suffered serious injuries. Early today she was seriously ill in the Christchurch Hospital. Thomas Gough, aged 19, of 518 St Asaph Street, was admitted to hospital with fairly serious injuries.

The driver, David John Reay Whitworth, aged 21, of 416 Linwood Avenue, and Misses Janice Williams, of 22 Portman Street, and Coleen Joanne Peard, of 15 Mackenzie Avenue, both aged 15, were also admitted to hospital. The car struck a fence and the side of a bridge before hitting the pole. It was extensively damaged. Rescuers had to saw through the brake pedal to release the driver.
