Strong Teams For Inter-Island Golf

Teams of considerable strength have been chosen to represent the North and South Islands in a junior golfing societies’ contest at Windsor and Waitildri on June 1 and 2.

Among the competitors will be the internationals, G. E. Clarke (Otago) and Misses W. Bryant and G. Taylor (both of Waikato). Two members of the 1968 New Zealand women’s squad, Misses M. Ensor (Canterbury) and H. Mowat (Manawatu), will be in»the field, as well as a number of Freyberg Rosebowl and Russell Grace Cup players. There will be great interest in the appearance of the 15-year-old Marilyn Smith, who played a vital part in Wellington’s winning of the Russell Grace Cup this year. “I feel that in a young girl, Marilyn Smith, New Zealand has the best woman prospect ever,” said the noted Australian professional, N. von Nida, after seeing her in action in January. At Dannevirke yesterday, Miss Smith, a daughter of the

Shandon club professional, A D. Smith, won the national junior girls’ championship, beating Sally Beadle, of Wanganui, 2 and 1, in the final. The South Island team consists of Clarke, P. R. Adams, the Southland left-hander. I. S. Beswarick (Timaru), and the three Canterbury representatives, D. R. Hope, R. M. Farrant and J. A. Orr. B. C. Taylor, another talented Canterbury player, is the reserve. The No. 1 player in the highly successful Buller-West-land - Marlborough - Nelson team at the recent Freyberg contest, G. R. Lummis, was not available. The girls in the South Island team are Misses Eni sor, S. Bissett (Canterbury), S. Hamilton (Otago), E. Thomas (Southland), V. : Stocks (Canterbury) and L. 'Walker (South Canterbury). ! The North Island teams i are:— Boys: R. Barltrop, M. Falloon, M. McDonald, R. Hamill, R. Sisson and B. Stewart. Girls: Misses Bryant, Taylor, Mowat, Smith, S. Beadle and G. Longley.
