Know Your Pattern Size
Patterns should be purchased by body-measurements, not by ready-to-wear size or age. Take your four body measurements while wearing a simple, well fitting dress with set In sleeves, and a proper foundation garment. Measure Bust: over fullest part, snugly but not tight. Waist: around natural waistline, comfortably. Hip: at 7in below the waist Back waist lengths: from prominent bone at back base of neck to waistline. If your measurements are not exactly the same as any in the pattern chart, choose the size nearest A sewing book by Simplicity, usually available where dress patterns are sold, contains a wealth of information, which includes explicit details on altering patterns. It costs very little and is a worthwhile investment.
