Many Vehicles Found To Be Defective
(Neto Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 14. During the first two weeks of the vehicle safety campaign, Transport Department officers ordered 67 motor vehicles off the roads because they were in a dangerous mechanical condition.
The Commissioner of Transport (Mr R. J. Polaschek) said that 56.992 vehicles had been checked and 3256, or nearly 6 per cent, had been found to be faulty. Nearly 15 per cent of the faults had been dangerously worn or damaged tyres, he said. Mr Polaschek said that motorists should remember
that on wet roads their safety depended to a large extent on their tyres. Safe and efficient braking, acceleration, and steering were impossible when smooth tyres lost their grip on winter road surfaces.
Mr Polaschek said he was very concerned at the results of checks on bicycles—just over half the bicycles inspected had been defective.
