Woman Leads Important Church Council Work
A woman has been appointed associate secretary-general of the World Council of Churches, and director of its division of inter-church aid, refugee and world service.
Mrs CharlotteBrowne - Mayers, of New York, is the first woman to hold the position. Of the 96 executives now employed by the World Council of Churches, 18 are women. Two women have headed departments but no woman has previously directed a division. Mrs Browne-Mayers, a membei of the United Church of Christ, was formerly director of adult education activities with the Standard Oil Company in New Jersey. Born in New England, Mrs Browne-Mayers comes from a family of doctors in Maine. Her father, Dr B. R. Browne, practised in Wiscasset. A brother, Dr B. P. Browne, a Baptist minister, was president of the American Baptist convention in 1962-1963, and
has been president of the Judson College in Elgin, Illinois, for the last four years. Mrs Browne-Mayers was educated at the Boston University College of Liberal Arts where she majored in history and economics. She did graduate work at Boston University School of Theology, and the Columbia University Teachers’ College and Graduate School of Business. She also directed adult education programmes for the Young Women’s Christian Association in Brooklyn, New York. She has served on the New York State Women’s Advisory Council, the advisory committee of the city's Guidance Centre for Women, and
the Mayor’s task force on youth and work in New York. The wife of a psychiatrist on the staff of Cornell Uni-
versity Medical College, Mrs Browne-Mayers has a married daughte. working in design and illustration.
