Services, Amenities Improved

To keep pace with tourist traffic the communities in Franz Josef and Fox Glacier townships have increased their accommo* elation and amenities to satisfy the travellers.

The Westland National Park Board has set itself an ambitious programme for building and development One of Its plans has reached fruition in the building at left completed at Fox Glacier. The building was financed in part by local contributions and fills the role of community centre, lecture hall—where slides of the glaciers are

Keen Interest has been shown in the building as a base for conventions, particularly during the winter period when the area experiences its best weather. Both townships have an aerodrome, the base for scenic flights up the glaciers and over the whole area.

Trips to the glaciers and Lake Matheson are arranged; there are garages at both townships, and rental cars or even a bicycle can be hired. Both areas have churches of several denominations as well as stores and tearooms to stock up on food supplies. Fishing licences and rods are hired out at Franz Josef Glacier and shooting permits can be obtained from the park rangers. Dominated by its mountains the park provides a challenge to hundreds of people each year who come to explore the ranges. Climbing in the region began in earnest in the 1880’s and from 1910 to 1950 guided climbing was predominant. Huts and bridges were built, tracks were formed and potential climbers were given encouragement
