STRONG TEAM
Eions For First Game (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) STILFONTEIN. The British Lions have picked a team of near test strength for the opening match of their South African tour, against Western Transvaal at Potchefstroom on Saturday. It is: T. Kiernan: M. Richards, J. Turner, G. Davies, K. Jones, M. Gibson, G. Edwards; A. Horton; J. Young, M. Coalman, R. Taylor, W. Mcßride; D. Thomas, M. Doyle, J. Teller.
Telfer, the only acknowledged number eight forward in the party, and captain of Scotland, is pack leader. The manager, Mr D. Brooks, said that all the players were fit and had been considered for selection.
The selectors have experimented at half-back, pairing the Irish fly-half, Gibson, and the Welsh scrum-half, Edwards.
Gibson and his Irish partner, R. Young, are acknowledged to be a more fluent partnership with an understanding borne of many matches played together. But Edwards, at this stage, is considered a more dynamic and better all-round player, although his passing in training has been erratic.
