Scout Awards Three Canterbury venturer seouts will receive Duke Of . Edinburgh, gold standard ’ award certificates from Prince Philip in Wellington on Mfr 21. They are Raymond Candy, of Tinwald, and Michael Skelly and lan Bathurst, of Christchurch. Food Poisoning? Three adults and-a child in the Waimairi County were affected with symptoms similar to those Of Salmonellosis, the Health Department reported yesterday.. The case was referred to as food poisoning, but the department said that the source of infection had not been conclusively identified. A similar illness had earlier affected a central Canterbury family with whom the Christchurch people had eaten a meal, and it was possible a carrier existed there. The cases are being investigated. Other diseases notified were a case of infective hepatitis and one of pulmonary tuberculosis. West Coast Industry A shortage of skilled labour was evident throughout the West Coast, said the district officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce in Christchurch (Mr A. V. Church) yesterday. Mr Ch’trch and the director of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. T. Alston) last week made a special study of the West Coast’s industrial potential. There were signs of a business improvement on the West Coast, he added, among them being the intention of Fletcher’s sawmill at Ruatapu to return to a five-day week from a fourday week. Students’ Snceess Members of the board of governors of the Christchurch Technical Institute last evening expressed pleasure at the success of a Maori student. Brandon Williams, in being awarded a B.A.L.M. scholarship. Another student, Roy Gearry. won the Janies Douglas Medallion in plumbing which was awarded by the Master Plumbers' Association at a function last evening. This was for the student gaining top marks in the trades certification examination. Bronze For Park The second J. M. Barrie bronze group for the Dunedin Botanic Gardens is due in September. The London sculptor, Mr Cecil Thomas, has told the donor, Mr Harold Richmond, that the casting has been completed and the half-ton statue will be shipped in July. The group includes Wendy and the two boys learning to fly, and' Nana the dog. It will be a companion piece for Peter Pan bronze now in the gardens.—(PA.)
