Anniversary Jazz

The city of New Orleans, popularly regarded as the birthplace of jazz, is 250 years old this year. One of the cultural events organised for the occasion is a huge jazz festival, which is being held this week.

It began on Sunday, with a jazz Mass in remembrance of all New Orleans, jazzmen, past and present; a' re-enactment of the “Birth of Jazz,” held in Jackson Square; and an evening jazz concert. Yesterday there were free jazz concerts at various places along the famous Canal Street; a jazz seminar; and a modern jazz concert at the City Auditorium. Later this week there will be more free concerts, a concert aboard the steamer President, i moonlight boat trip up the Mississippi with three bands on board, a jazzman’s parade from the International Trade Mart to Beauregard Square (once known as Congo Square), and more concerts in the City Auditorium by major jazz bands and soloists.
