D TIME-TEMPERATURE MEASURING UNIT Research at the Physics and Engineering Laboratory of D.S.I.R. has led to the development of a simple “temperature sensor’* that measures the average temperature of an environment over a period of time. The units can be used either to i measure the average temperature (providing the time is known), or to measure time (if made independent of temperature), or as an integrator of both time and temperature (an important feature in determining the shelf-life of many perishable products). The units have been thoroughly tested and have been used to determine the average temperature in precooled foodstuffs during trans- ■ port, the temperature of hot i water cylinders attached to solar heaters, outside air temi perature, etc. A considerable • market is foreseen. The units > comprise a small “electro-plat-I ing bath" made up of a short i length plastic tubing filled with ; an electrolyte and capped with , pre-weighed metal electrodes. If - the period of operation is known : the average temperature during r the period can be calculated. . Test periods from two days to . six months can be monitored e with considerable accuracy. , The effective temperature range j can be adjusted from below » freezing point to 120 degrees F. r Patent rights are held in New i Zealand by the New Zealand I Government Property Corpora- • tion. Interested firms are invited [ to submit proposals setting out . the terms under which they t would be prepared to develop t and manufacture units under a , na»ent licence agreement with ' D.S.I.R. A fuller description of the unit may be obtained from: THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL. D.5.1.R., Private Bag, Wellington. 6019 ! BREAD COOLING EQUIPMENT Research at the Physics and Engineering Laboratory of » D.S.I.R. has led to the development of a rapid method for I cooling bread. Bread taken straight from the oven can be : cooled within 2-3 minutes to a point where it can be put through the bread cutters and wrapped. The method depends on the absorption of air into the centre of the loaf via hollow needles. Examination by the Wheat Research Institute of bread cooled in this way Indi- . cates that the loaf is not dam* 1 aged in any way as a result of thia treatment. A unit capable of handling one loaf at a time has been built and tested. Patent rights in New Zealand. Australia and the United Kingdom are being sought by the New Zealand Government Property j Corporation. Interested firms are . Incited to submit proposals setj ting out the terms under which ) they would be prepared (with 5 assistance from D.5.1.R.) to de- « velop and manufacture a full scale unit suitable for use in bakeries. Subsequent manufacr ture would be under a patent 1 licence agreement with the r D.S.I.R. Addition Information on f the equipment and licensing i orocedure may be obtained b from the Director-General, D.5.1.R., Private Bag, Welling--5 ton. - <OlB CONVERSION OF EM CLUB TO NAVY EXCHANGE AND I CONSTRUCTION OF PUBLIC 5 WORKSHOP TENDERS are invited to (1) Cont vert wood frame theatre build o ing to a two-storey Navy Ex I change with concrete floor and y spaces for store area, office, J toilets, barber shop and stor--1 age, and (2) Construct concrete block Public Works building, y 40ft x 60ft, with space for a i, workshop, storage rooms, office i, and toilet facilities.
