Textbooks Criticised
fN.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 12. Standard theory and harmony textbooks were criticised last night by Professor P. Platt for their abstract quality and lack of real direction. Profes.or Platt, head of the music department at Otago University, was giving the opening address to 50 private music teachers from all parts of the South Island who are in Dunedin for a week-end course on various aspects of their profession. "The worst feature of these books is that they do not seem to lead up to real music but only a theoretical abstract," he said. Professor Platt advocated the extensive use of Bach chorales on which to base study, even in the elementary stages, rather than a slavish adherence to standard textbooks. He emphasised that the concept of real music must always be before the pupil rather than just a set of rules.
