OLYMPIC NOT AS STRONG
An Olympic harrier team slightly below full strength will face a stern challenge from Christchurch when the season’s second interclub cross-country event—the Canterbury Centre’s races—are held over a 12-mile course at the South Brighton Domain on Saturday.
Olympic will be without one of its great stalwarts, J. D. MacDonald, while P.. Yardley has moved to Tokoroa. But its four-man team of G. Clarke, N. Reid, R. Stevens and D. Reece will be hard to beat.
B. Dyer and A. Buckley both missed the University
club’s Hagley relay, but are back in the Christchurch team. The tireless W. K. Kennedy and J. Collie are the other members of the quartet. The form of J. Power (Timaru) will be watched with interest. A top-class performance from him could considerably elevate the position of his team. He will be well supported by P. Gray. Although St Martins has not entered its best combination, it is still capable of finishing in the first three. D. Grieg and the reliable P. Brown will lead its challenge. Olympic’s B team should perform well. The team contains two very experienced runners, B. Curie and T. Preece. University and New Brighton have entered useful teams.
New Brighton is likely to win the senior colts event. The only women’s team entered, Ladies’ Pioneer, will run in this event. More than 60 teams have been entered for the races. This is double the number that competed last year.
Hole-ln-One.—Mrs A. R. Grant holed her tee shot at the 162-yd hole at Russley using a 3-wood, when playing in a mixed Canadian foursome stroke match.
