TOKYO. May 13.
A Japanese Government Investigation team todav voiced a strong suspicion that the American nuclear submarine Swordfish was responsible for abnormal radioactive contamination near Sasebo recently. The leader of the group. Dr Fumio Yamazaki, who announced this after his return from the south Japan port, said further studies would be made.
On May 6, a Japanese ship detected radioactivity 10 to 20 times above normal in the water and in the air at three points near the submarine, which was in Sasebo for a rest visit. The level was not, however, dangerous to people. Japanese Government officials are declining comment until the final outcome of the inquiry. Observers think the incident could blow up into a political and diplomatic row.
