REPEAT OF HISTORY

Jamboree At Kaiapoi History will be made, and repeated, when the Governor General (Sir Arthur Porritt), in his capacity as Dominion Chief Scout, opens the fifth national scout jamboree at the “Blue Skies” scout camp at Kaiapoi on January 2, next year.

The first scout camp held in New Zealand was at Woodend over the New Year period of 1908-1909. It closed on January 2,1909. Exactly 60 years later Sir Arthur Porritt will open the largest jamboree in New Zealand. That the jamboree will be held at Kaiapoi also has its roots in history, for the first scout troop formed In New Zealand was the Kaiapoi one. Almost 8000 scouts and venturers are expected to attend the jamboree. About 1000 scouts are expected from overseas, including contingents from Japan, Australia, the Pacific Islands, Malaysia, Canada and the United States. A Swedish contingent may also attend.

A special guest of the jamboree will be the American astronaut, Commander M. Scott Carpenter, who was a boy scout in Boulder, Colorado.
