Waikato Hurdles To Grey Count

•The Preaa" Special Service AUCKLAND. In his first Jumping race of ths year. Cray Count ran away with tha Waikato Hurdles at Ta Rapa on Saturday. In most respects, Grey Count had an edge on his opponents and in his jumping he was right

out on his own. He added lengths to an already commanding lead with a big leap at the last fence and had the rest of the run home to himself. Beyond, for all his 11-12. fought on gamely until the

home turn. He then began to fall away and it was only in a very hard struggle that he kept second place from Macdonald and Silver Eagle. Scorn and Olde Chelsea, after keeping well up until the home turn came next after a gap. The other four still in the race were beaten off, with Gladaub, an early leader, and Confer the tailenders. The big race had a sensational start when Eiffel Tower came down at the first hurdle. Eiffel Tower was close behind the leaders in a crowded run to the first fence and hardly rose to the jump. He went the next mile riderless until taken in hand by a clerk of the course. W. J. Hillis, the trainer-rider of Eiffel Tower, was on his feet in a moment, quite unhurt, and he said later that the horse, except for a cut or two, seemed uninjured. Eiffel Tower, in a bracket with Macdonald, was 1/1 in the order of favouritism and Grey Count was 2/3. A seven-vear-old grey gelding, by Count Rendered. Grey Count won over hurdles at Trentham, Avondale, Tauranga and Rotorua last winter. He returned to racing after the summer in a hack mile at Te A ’oha early tn April and the Waikato Hurdles was his fifth race meanwhile.
