Two Share Lead In Women’s Hockey

After the third round of the Canterbury women's hockey senior championship, Carlton and Harewood share the lead with three wins. Results: Carlton 6, Bumside 1. Harewood 4, University L Rawhltl 9, Teachers* Collage X. Aranul 4, Dlgbys 5. Points: Carlton 3. Harewood 3, Aranul 2. University I}, Rawhiti 14, Digbys 1, Burnside 0, Teachers’ College 0. Harewood v. University Harewood’s victory over University was well-deserved because of its application to the fundamentals of hockey—sound trapping, accurate passing and close marking. It was a pity that its performance was marred by persistent stick interference and some illegal tackling from the left. Such tactics are unnecessary in a team of its calibre. The Harewood forwards functioned well as a unit, and were ably led by L. Rutledge at right inner, whose elusive dribbling and constructive passing continually probed University’s defence. She was well supported by her inside forwards. L. Baylis and P. Walker. The half line gave close support on attack and M. Poulsen at left half trapped well and made many interceptions through sound positioning. J. Capstick played very soundly, her positional play, trapping and tackling making her Harewood's mainstay on deep defence.

University’s performance was disappointing, the team failing to reproduce its form of previous weeks. Most of its trouble stemmed from faulty trapping. It was unable to keep possession and this, plus the inability of the forwards to function as a unit, meant that most of its attacks foundered. A. McKenna, although under considerable pressure, did sterling work, and L. McAllister and L. Otter provided some stability on deep defence. Hare wood's goals were scored by L. Rutledge (3) and L. Bayliss and R. Mclntyre scored for University. Carlton v. Burnside

Carlton was not extended to comfortably defeat a weakened Burnside team. The main avenue of Carlton’s attacks was through the inside forward trio of J. Wilson, G. Phillips and A. Howman, whose passing and combination made them a constant threat. S. Comer initiated many attacks with her constructive passing. M. Bruhns and L. Drummond, apart from one lapse which led to Burnside’s goal, covered well and cleared strongly. Burnside fought valiantly and R. Johnstone, on the right wing, made some strong runs. A. Alleway, at left inner, showed considerable promise and made some elusive breaks, one of which brought Burnside’s goal. In the defence, S. Alleway showed improved form at centre half, trapping and Intercepting well and covering quickly. S Cusdin had a busy day at goal and made some fine saves under pressure. Carlton’s goals were scored by G. Phillips and A. Howman. A. Alleway scored Burnside's goal. Aranul v. Digby* In a rather scrappy sama, Aranui’a superior combination

give it victory over Digby*. The first-half exchange* were fairly even, but in the second half Aranul concentrated it* attack* through its wing* and Digby* had difficulty in countering thi* manoeuvre. F. Thompson made Mme good break* on the right wing and received Mund *upport from J. Dann at right inner. S. Cowie* again back-tsekled well and wa* responsible for some effective switches of play. C. Anderson revealed opportunism in the circle. A. Ruston at right half covered quickly and her accurate passing enabled her to make a number of openings for her forwards. At right back. K. Noonan was very steady, Mr accurate passing being of considerable value to her team. The Digbys inside forward trio of J. Hardie, B. Turbott and M. Morris played with considerable thrust and Morris' nailing was of particular value In providing openings for her forward*. D. Quinn played soundly at centre-half, covering quickly and providing elose support on attack. Aranul'* goal* were scored by S. Cowles (2), J. Dann and C. Henderson. J. Hardie, B. Turbott and M. Morris scored Digbys goals. Rawhltl v. Teachers’ College Although Rawhltl gained an easy victory. Teachers’ College was not disgraced and deserved credit for the manner in which it fought back, as It was one short for the game and H. Sheear who filled in a* goalie, gave a courageous performance. For Rawhltl, A. Walker played very soundly st left inner, linking quickly with her defence and passing constructively. She received good support from N. Mota and M. Bennett made some strong break* on the right wing. A. Rouse provided close support on attack and H. Warren showed Improved form with her trapping and passing. For Teachers’ College, H. Sheear made some fine saves in goal, and J. Fright’s experience was of value to her team on deep defence. The team, in spite of its being a forward short, launched a series of counter-attack* and from one of these M. Clausen, at left Inner, scored her team’s only goal. The forwards backtackled assiduously and were of considerable assistance to their hard-pressed defence. H. Walker, N. Mots and H. Warren scored Rawhitl’s goals and M. Clausen scored for Teachers’ College. LOWER GRADES
