10-Minute Games
Although the competitive spirit was lacking to some extent in Saturday’s basketball games, the day was noted for the partial emergence from the basketball wilderness of the St Nicholas team, which beat Hagley B and lost by one goal to New Brighton in a tournament held in place of the regular inter-club competition. The matches comprised two spells of five minutes each, and teams were separated into three grades, the senior grade, other senior teams, and junior teams, and matches were played on a handicap basis. New Brighton, which is leading the senior grade, won its section when it beat Sacred Heart 9-7 In its last game. Sacred Heart started with a two goal advantage. New Brighton had earlier drawn with Technical, its co-leader in the senior grade. Technical did not play at all well and the side’s goal shooting was inaccurate. In the section for senior teams not in the senior grade, a third grade side, Halswell A, beat a senior reserve side, Technical B, 15-18, In the final. Halswell were given a start of 10 goals. The junior section was won by Sacred Heart P which, with an advantage of three goals, beat St’Teresa’s, 10-4. Competition games resume next Saturday. Canterbury B Squad
